RISD graduate awarded $35K for documentary

PROVIDENCE –Filmmaker RaMell Ross, a 2014 Rhode Island School of Design graduate, has been awarded a $35,000 production/post-production grant from the Sundance Institute to complete his documentary, “Hale County.”
Ross’ film follows two African American youths on the cusp of adulthood as they struggle to establish themselves in and beyond historic Hale County, Ala.
Ross, who earned a RISD master’s degree in photography, had been working on the film and a portfolio of corresponding photographs while pursuing his graduate degree at RISD. Three years before coming to RISD, Ross moved from Washington, D.C., to Greensboro, Ala., to manage an at-risk youth program, and met Quincy Bryant and Daniel Collins, the subjects of his film.
The award was part of Sundance Documentary Film Program’s Spring 2014 award of $975,000 to 44 films. •
