PROVIDENCE – A Business Insider’s survey has ranked the Rhode Island School of Design the top design school in the world.
RISD topped the list of The World’s 25 Best Design Schools according to a group of art directors, product designers and other industry professionals who were asked to judge a school’s value.
“Art and design will drive innovation in the 21st century like science and technology did in the last century,” said RISD President John Maeda in a statement. “This Business Insider ranking is a testament to RISD’s work to prepare students for success in a wide array of fields, and recognition that now, more than ever, design-focused organizations are disrupting industries and sparking innovation.”
In the survey, 81.5 percent of respondents said that RISD’s program is valuable.
The survey had 633 participants and 87.8 percent said they had studied or participated in a college-level design program.
RISD also was noted for having two alumni, Brian Chesky (class of 2004) and Joe Gebbia (class of 2005), as co-founders of Airbnb, and online and mobile phone based community marketplace for booking and learning about unique lodging around the world.
“Acknowledgement of RISD’s emphasis on ‘artrepreneurship’ from the technology and business world is great news for all of us who love this iconic institution,” said RISD Board Chair Michael Spalter in a statement.
United Schools dominated the top five schools with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, The University of Cincinnati [College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning], Carnegie Mellon University School of Design, and Parsons the New School for Design coming in behind RISD.
