RISD tops list of best animation, game design schools on East Coast

THE RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN topped Animation Career Review's list of the Top 20 Animation and Game Design Schools on the East Coast.

PROVIDENCE - The Rhode Island School of Design and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ranked first and 17th respectively in Animation Career Review’s Top 20 Animation and Game Design Schools on the East Coast.

Animation Career Review focused on two specific opportunities at RISD: the first, a bachelor of fine arts program for film/animation/video “well respected in the world of animation and game art”; the second, RISD’s “excellent game design program for young adults” ages 12 to 17, which gives participants the chance to receive a certificate before graduating from high school. These certificate holders typically enroll in the BFA in film/animation/video after graduating from high school, according to Animation Career Review.

Graduates who hold a RISD BFA in film/animation/video and a game design certificate may find that these qualifications boost their career opportunities and earning potential, Animation Career Review said in its report.

The online resource also mentioned the Fleet Library — one of the oldest independent art libraries in the United States, according to BestMastersPrograms.org — the “lively campus filled with art venues,” the Museum of Art and the Nature Lab as pluses for RISD.

Coming in at No. 17, UMass Dartmouth was recognized for its College of Visual and Performing Arts. This college offers various graduate, undergraduate and certificate programs for aspiring animators and game artists, Animation Career Review noted, such as a BFA in visual design with digital media, graphic design and illustration options; a BFA and MFA in fine arts; an MFA in visual design and certificates in fine arts as well as web interaction and design.

Animation Career Review observed that some game design students choose to pursue a computer science degree or minor at UMass Dartmouth’s College of Engineering, as many game design companies seek employees with programming skills.

Overall Massachusetts schools dominated the list at a total of seven out of 20, including UMass Dartmouth. The other six Massachusetts schools were Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston (No. 9), Becker College in Worcester (No. 12), Northeastern University in Boston (No. 14), Emerson College in Boston (No. 15), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (No. 16) and the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University (No. 20).

Animation Career Review’s ranking criteria consisted of the following factors, “in no particular order”: academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, value as it relates to tuition and geographic location.

The online resource explained that geographic location was a significant factor because “Students who attend school in animation and game design meccas… have a distinct advantage over students in other parts of the country in terms of networking opportunities, internships, freelance gigs, and career specific part-time work.”
