PROVIDENCE – Roger Williams Medical Center plans to significantly expand its emergency department and renovate several interior spaces, to provide more space and privacy for patients, and to improve access.

The institutional master plan is expected to receive a final review and approval by the Providence City Plan Commission on Tuesday. The city panel reviews all significant development.

The proposed expansion of the existing 10,000-square-foot emergency facility would begin in the fall and would include a renovation of the original space and construction of an addition to expand the size of patient bays. The addition would be 11,000 square feet, according to the Planning Department.

In addition, the hospital plans to renovate its front entrance and lobby to connect it to upper levels with an elevator, establish an entrance canopy and reconfigure parking. In 2017, the endoscopy center also will be renovated, and a new digestive disease center created.
