BRISTOL – Roger Williams University School of Law has launched two initiatives to provide students with hands-on training, an experiential-learning center and a guarantee of practical work experience, the school announced.

RWU recently launched the Feinstein Center for Pro Bono and Experiential Education to coordinate hands-on learning for law students. The school has also guaranteed that “every qualified student will be afforded a substantial clinical experience” either at the in-house legal clinics or at a law firm through an externship program, according to a release.

“What we’re offering is a continuum of opportunities,” said Laurie Barron, the Feinstein Center’s executive director. “Whether a student wants to forge a career in business law, immigration law, criminal law or anything in between, they can come to us and plan for a structured sequence of legal experiences. Whatever the specialty, we’ll guarantee them a semester in the trenches gaining real-world legal skills.”

Though the offer of clinical experience is nothing new, RWU Law is now one of the few schools in the country to guarantee that experience by graduation, according to the release.

The new center grew out of the Feinstein Institute for Legal Service, which has offered pro-bono services to low-income residents since 1996.
