Roger Williams University’s decision to expand its downtown Providence presence by moving into the former home of 38 Studios LLC is appealing on a number of fronts.
Of course, it is a good sign that the school sees Providence as an important part of its mission.
Through its Professional Education Center, RWU President Donald J. Farish has said the school has a “role to play” in connecting its students to the experiences and skills that the marketplace needs.
And the larger space – roughly 75,000 square feet – will give the state’s only law school a more accommodating space to train its students, including a closer connection to the state and federal courts in the city.
But the other piece of this puzzle is closing another chapter in the 38 Studios saga. By taking up the vast majority of the space in the former home of the video game failure, RWU is injecting vitality into a key neighborhood of the city.
Thus, as is so often the case, while focusing on taking care of its own business, Roger Williams University is contributing to the greater good. •
