RWU’s Providence campus renovations under way

PROVIDENCE – Roger Williams University has begun interior renovations at One Empire Plaza, which on completion will double the footprint of its Providence campus.
The work will involve full renovations to the first four floors of the building, as well as a portion of the fifth floor, according to Lynda Curtis, a spokeswoman for the university, which has its main campus in Bristol.
The university is leasing 76,566 square feet of space at a cost of $23 million over 12 years. Of that, about $11 million will be spent on renovations.
The construction manager is Columbia Construction Co. of North Reading, Mass. Interior demolition began in October and construction was expected to begin shortly, she said.
The work will create classrooms, conference rooms, meeting spaces and offices, as well as a bookstore and a grab-and-go café. The building will provide space for law students, undergraduates and adult learners, according to university officials.
Construction is expected to be completed in May 2016.
One Empire Plaza, at 1 Empire St., Providence, was the former headquarters for the failed video game company 38 Studios.
