PROVIDENCE – Gov.-elect Gina M. Raimondo has indicated her intention to nominate Scott Jensen to the position of director of the state Department of Labor and Training to replace Director Charles J. Fogarty. At the same time, Raimondo announced her intention to nominate Melba Depena to the position of director of Human Services, replacing Sandra M. Powell.
The names will be submitted for consideration to the R.I. Senate in January for confirmation, Raimondo said.
“A well-trained workforce and a commitment to helping Rhode Islanders when they need it most are the important cornerstones of a government that works,” Raimondo said. “Melba and Scott have the background and experiences that make them the perfect candidates to strengthen Rhode Island for everyone.”
Jensen is deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Earn Maryland program, which prepares people with the skills they need to compete in today’s economy, has become a national model. Jensen has presented his initiative around the country.
Jensen has a bachelor’s degree in history from Illinois State University and holds a master’s degree in liberal education from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Md., according to the state of Maryland.
Depena, who now serves on Raimondo’s transition staff, had previously served as director for the Crime Victims Compensation Unit in the office of the general treasurer. Before that, she was executive director for the Providence Human Relations Commission. She has served on the board of directors of organizations including the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Corporation Committee, and The Latino Civic Fund, among others.
Depena is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where she received a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in human development and family studies.
Raimondo praised the outgoing directors of DLT and DHS, and indicated they would continue to serve in state government.
“[Fogarty and Powell] have served Rhode Island with great dedication and professionalism,” Raimondo said. “We are confident that they will continue to serve ably in new roles in state government.”
