PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo signed an executive order Thursday aimed at fostering innovation in government.
The “Lean Government Initiative” will allow state employees to focus on improvements in procedure that add to delays, unnecessary steps and processing time, according to the governor’s office.
“Lean is a proven tool used by manufacturers to eliminate waste, get rid of unnecessary steps, reduce wait and processing times and realize greater efficiency as well as cost reductions,” the release stated.
The governor’s proposed fiscal 2016 budget includes $100,000 for the initiative in the Office of Management and Budget, and establishes a mentorship program for Cabinet directors, with private sector leaders who have experience in “lean” process improvement.
The initiative was announced at the Richmond headquarters of Vibco Inc., a manufacturer of industrial vibrators for the asphalt, concrete, food, chemical, pharmaceutical and agriculture industries. Company President Karl Wadensten, in a statement, said the company has participated in lean manufacturing for the past eight years.
“Lean is about helping to eliminate the things that prevent you from ‘working on the work’,” he said, in a statement. “Hunting for things, repeating and passing mistakes forward, filling out unnecessary forms, moving things around, waiting for answers, those things get in the way and frustrate everyone.”
