PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad have been appointed to the Governor’s Wind Energy Coalition leadership team for the 2016 term.
Branstad will serve as chair, and Raimondo as vice-chair.
“As the governor of the first state in the nation to develop offshore wind resources, I look forward to working with other governors to expand offshore wind,” Raimondo said in a recent press release.
Raimondo said she is optimistic about opportunities that the Block Island wind farm will bring into the state. Aside from the prospects of diversifying sources of energy and ensuring “long-term energy affordability,” Raimondo also said the offshore wind energy sector could create jobs.
The Governor’s Wind Energy Coalition describes itself as a group of the nation’s governors who are committed to building up the United States’ access to wind energy.
The group hopes to lower the nation’s dependence on imported energy sources and help grow the economy through the wind energy industry.
The coalition will meet in Rhode Island next year to examine the practices of offshore wind energy that the state has begun to put into practice.
