PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo has established the R.I. Outdoor Recreation Council to inform people about the state’s recreational assets and encourage residents to enjoy these spaces.
“Rhode Island’s natural assets are unmatched, with amazing beaches, parks, campgrounds, bike paths, the bay and waterways,” Raimondo said in a press release from the governor’s office. “The state can do more to encourage use of these resources and promote this critical sector of Rhode Island’s economy.”
First Gentleman Andy Moffit also has joined Raimondo in this campaign to endorse the use of Rhode Island recreational opportunities. Moffit will chair the council.
One of the council’s goals is to build healthy lifestyles, especially for young children. Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, director of the R.I. Department of Health and co-vice chair of the council, believes that this group’s mission to increase recreational usage is “is vital to addressing obesity, physical inactivity, and mental health in our state.”
Director Janet L. Coit of the state Department of Environmental Management will join Alexander-Scott as co-vice chair of the council. As part of this council, members will advise the governor on how to effectively manage the environmental and recreational resources available in Rhode Island. They will also offer input into how to promote increased activity within the state’s recreational assets as well as encourage the adoption of healthier lifestyle practices.
“Every year, these treasured places welcome millions of people,” Coit said in the press release. “They are part of our social fabric and identity, as well as important tourist attractions.”
