Raimondo lauds students for financial literacy

Posted 3/26/13

SMITHFIELD – Fifth-graders at Old County Elementary School have completed a pilot financial literacy curriculum called Vault and earned recognition from Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo for their achievements, according to a press release.

“This program helps students understand how money works and the importance of making good, lifelong financial decisions,” Raimondo said.

The Vault program builds on the financial literacy program EverFi introduced to Rhode Island high schools last year. The program is in collaboration with Navigant Credit Union and students from Bryant University’s Enactus organization.

“We teach children reading, math and writing at an early age. There’s no reason for us to wait until they’re older before we teach them how to handle money,” said Navigant Credit Union President and CEO Gary Furtado.

The Vault curriculum includes financial responsibility and decision-making, income and careers, planning and money management, credit and debt, insurance and risk management, and savings and investing.
