PROVIDENCE – Governor-elect Gina M. Raimondo has named Stephen S. Neuman as her chief of staff.

Neuman, who has been working for Md. Gov. Martin O’Malley, will officially start working for Raimondo Jan. 6.

Meanwhile, he will help with the ongoing work of the governor-elect’s transition.

“I am excited to have Steve help lead my team as we work to move Rhode Island forward,” Raimondo said in a statement. “His experience working for governors in Maryland, North Carolina and Missouri will be invaluable as we work to find new and creative solutions here.”

O’Malley said Neuman was a key part of the team that increased the minimum wage in Maryland to $10.10. He also helped to enact the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act to support 57,000 jobs by building roads, bridges and transit projects, O’Malley said.

“We appreciate his service to the citizens of Maryland, and wish him the best as he helps Governor-elect Raimondo achieve results for middle class families in Rhode Island,” he said.

Neuman currently is director of public affairs for O’Malley, where his duties include overseeing various strategic policy and communications efforts as well as managing various day-to-day operations and administration of the office. He also serves as the chief liaison to the Md. Department of Business and Economic Development, among other agencies.

Prior to joining O’Malley’s office, he worked for N.C. Gov. Beverly Purdue and was an attorney with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He is a graduate of Washington University School of Law and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
