Raimondo signs ID-theft bills

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Gina M. Raimondo has signed the Identity Theft Protection Act of 2015, legislation that bolsters protections for personal information in the state.

Sponsored by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma, D-Middletown, and Rep. Stephen R. Ucci, D-Johnston, the legislation requires whomever stores, collects, processes, maintains, acquires, uses, licenses or owns personal information about a Rhode Island resident to implement “reasonable security procedures.” It also requires swift notification whenever there is a breach in the security system protecting personal information that poses a risk of identity theft to a Rhode Island resident.

The legislation also addresses ambiguities in previous law, such as clarifying that municipal agencies are subject to its provisions.
