Raptakis wants study of Coventry fire districts

PROVIDENCE – Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis, D-Coventry, last week called for a study of fire service in Coventry, to determine whether the community should establish one independent fire district or a townwide fire department.
Coventry is one of several Rhode Island communities with independent fire districts. The town has four separate districts, including the Central Coventry Fire District – which is preparing to file for bankruptcy – and the former Anthony Fire District, now named the Coventry Fire District – which has recently come under scrutiny for the alleged misconduct of its chief.
Raptakis said he will introduce legislation calling for a legislative commission to conduct a comprehensive study of the issue. The commission, under the legislation to be submitted in January, would be composed of 17 individuals, including legislators, municipal leaders and representatives of the fire districts. •
