Raynham approves slot parlor

RAYNHAM, Mass. – Raynham voters approved a slot parlor at Raynham Park with a vote of 1,822 for and 290 against Tuesday night, NBC 10 reported.

The vote moves forward Raynham Park LLC’s bid for the lone slot parlor license in Massachusetts. The winner will directly compete with Rhode Island’s Twin River slot parlor, where half the patrons are Massachusetts residents.

Raynham residents cited the financial benefit for the town in approving the slot parlor.

“I’m not a gambler, but you know something? You shouldn’t leave the building empty and it gives Raynham money so why not?” said supporter Mary Amaral, according to NBC.

Raynham Park LLC said it plans to invest $220 million in the Raynham site, the Taunton Gazette reported.

The other communities in the running for the slots license – Milbury, Leominster and Tewksbury – will hold referendum votes next month on whether to approve the slot parlor bids in those towns.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will select a winner from the proposals that win community approval.

Last week the commission made a positive recommendation for Raynham Park LLC while issuing a negative one for Ourway Realty LLC (Plainridge Racecourse), according to the Boston Business Journal.
