PROVIDENCE – Red Stripe, the East Side brasserie restaurant, announced plans on Wednesday to open a second location at 455 Main St. in East Greenwich.

Red Stripe is the fourth restaurant to occupy the space in the past decade, including most recently Caprice Restaurant & Bar. The new eatery is expected to open this summer after renovations are complete.

General Manager Stan Kachnowicz said in a release that the town’s Historic District Commission has already granted initial approval of the company’s plans, which include changing the windows so that they open onto the street and adding Red Stripe’s signature red awning, large fork, logo and color scheme.

“Other than giving the front of the building a facelift and adding kitchen equipment, the site is ideal for our needs,” said Kachnowicz.

The restaurant, which at 5,000 square feet is larger than the Wayland Square location and seats 175, will be open for dinner seven days a week, with brunch and late lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. As at the Providence Red Stripe, there are no plans for live entertainment at the new location. The East Greenwich town council has held up the application for another restaurant operator to reopen the former Rok Bar and Post Office Cafe at the other end of Main Street over neighborhood objections to proposed live music.

The East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce claims 32 member restaurants, and industry estimates put the total number of eateries in town between 35 and 40.

“We’re excited to bring our Red Stripe experience to the neighborhood of East Greenwich,” said Kachnowicz. “The clientele is comparable to our Providence location where we see many of our guests out for a stroll or out shopping.”

The Red Stripe concept was created by Providence celebrity chef Jaime D’Oliveira in the 1990s and was one of the first casual fine dining restaurants in the state. D’Oliveira sold Red Stripe along with Providence fine dining landmark Mills Tavern in 2007 to the owners of Ocean State Job Lot.

Red Stripe was named a 2013 OpenTable Diners’ Choice Winner for having one of the best diner ratings of any restaurant in Providence.
