Reed announces $3.4M for lead-hazard reduction

PROVIDENCE – In an effort to protect families with low incomes from lead-based paint hazards within their homes, Sen. Jack F. Reed on June 13 announced that Rhode Island will receive $3.4 million in federal funding.

Rhode Island Housing will partner with several organizations to develop and implement lead-poisoning prevention strategies with the funds, including: the R.I. Office of Housing and Community Development, R.I. Department of Health, R.I. Office of Weatherization, cities of Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence and Woonsocket, Blackstone Valley Community Action Program, Community Action Program of Providence, West Bay Community Action Program, East Bay Community Action Program, Housing Network of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Builders Association, R.I. Department of Labor and Training, Childhood Lead Action Project and the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Rhode Island. This level of funding is expected to produce 250 lead-safe and healthy housing units.

The money is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Lead Hazard Reduction Demonstration Grant program and Healthy Homes supplemental funding. •
