Regional consumer prices rise 0.4% in December

PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast rose 0.4 percent in December compared with December 2013, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Nationally, the consumer price index increased 0.8 percent during the same time period. Numbers are on a nonseasonally adjusted basis.
The bureau includes items such as food and beverages, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, energy and recreation. Figures for the Northeast consumer price index include the six New England states as well as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
Compared with a year ago, regional prices of food and beverages rose 3 percent, while housing inched up 1.5 percent. Nationally, food and beverages increased 3.3 percent, and housing, 2.5 percent.
Medical care increased 3.1 percent, in line with a national increase of 3 percent. Apparel dropped 0.3 percent. Nationally, apparel prices fell 2 percent.
Transportation and energy had the greatest declines at 6 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively. The national numbers were similar at a 6.2 percent drop for transportation, and 10.6 percent decrease for energy.
