BOSTON - The Consumer Price Index in the Northeast rose 1.2 percent over the last 12 months to 248.6 in May, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Northeast region includes the six New England states as well as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
Nationally, the index for all items, including the volatile food and energy prices, increased 1.4 percent to 233 before seasonal adjustment, year over year in May.
Regionally, the energy index dropped 2.1 percent to 239.9 in May. Comparatively, the national energy index fell 1 percent to 247.8.
The housing index in the Northeast posted a 1.9 percent year-over-year increase in May, outpacing the national increase by 0.3 percentage points.
Regionally, the index for transportation fell 0.4 percent to 217.5, as the national transportation index fell 0.6 percent to 219.4.
