PROVIDENCE – AAA Southern New England reported a 2 cent per gallon gasoline price decline in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts this week, the sixth consecutive week that prices have fallen in the region. The declines come as more Americans prepare to travel over the Labor Day holiday than at any time since 2008.
Self-serve, unleaded regular gas averaged $3.53 per gallon in the Ocean State, according to the auto club’s weekly price survey and represents a 12-cent per gallon decline in the last month. A year ago, the average price was $3.73 per gallon.
At the same time, AAA reported a 2 cent per gallon drop in Massachusetts as well, bringing the average price in the Bay State to $3.46 per gallon for self-serve, unleaded regular gasoline. The new price is 13 cents below the price a month ago and 17 cents less than a year earlier.
On the whole, Massachusetts filling stations remained less expensive than their counterparts in Rhode Island, with midgrade unleaded averaging $3.67 per gallon, compared with $3.77 in the Ocean State. Premium unleaded averaged $3.81 in Massachusetts, compared with $3.90 in Rhode Island, while diesel fuel averaged $3.86 in the Bay State and $3.89 in Rhode Island.
The national average price of $3.45 per gallon of self-serve, unleaded regular gasoline is 1 cent less than the price in Massachusetts and 8 cents less than in Rhode Island.
