Renovation of Satin Doll building acquired by AS220 underway

PROVIDENCE – The renovation of downtown’s last strip club into a performing arts space for AS220 began late in January, starting with the ceremonial removal of the brass dancers’ poles. The Satin Doll building, purchased by the nonprofit arts organization last year, will become the new Main Stage performance space for the group.
AS220 acquired the building, at 35 Aborn St., in June 2015 with assistance from the Providence Redevelopment Authority and the Providence Revolving Fund. Grants and other funds also were received through The Champlin Foundations, Coastway Community Bank, Cornish Associates, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and the R.I. State Council on the Arts.
Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects has designed a reconfiguration of space within the existing, 3,000-square-foot-building that will allow AS220 to accommodate nearly 200 people. Pezzuco Construction Inc., Engineering Design Services Inc. and Yoder & Tidwell Ltd. also will be involved, according to a news release.
The $1.7 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2016. Once completed, the arts organization will undertake a major upgrade of its site on Empire Street.
