Rep. wants to exempt some taxes for seniors

PROVIDENCE – Rep. Robert E. Craven, D-North Kingstown, has introduced legislation aimed at easing the tax burden on Rhode Island retirees at least 65 years of age before the close of a taxable year by exempting from the state income tax all Social Security benefits, as well as income received from federal, state and local government retirement plans, disability benefits, military pensions, and private pension and deferred-compensation plans.
In a statement, Craven said the legislation is “strongly supported by the House leadership team.”
The legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Finance. •
