BARRINGTON – When it comes to affluence, Barrington is the top community in Rhode Island.
According to The Business Journals’ affluence rankings, “Where the Money Lives,” Barrington, with its 02806 zip code, ranks the highest in the Ocean State with a median household income of $103,696 and median house value of $399,200. Its score on the affluence index was 214.6 – the higher the score, the better, according to the report.
Next on the list was Jamestown, scoring 192 on the affluence index, with a median household income of $90,484 and median house value of $491,000.
Third place went to Saunderstown, a village in North Kingstown, with a score of 180.7, median household income of $109,375 and median house value of $408,100. East Greenwich grabbed the fourth spot, with a 170 affluence score, median household income of $85,429 and median house value of $371,400.
On the other end of the spectrum, Central Falls had the lowest affluence score at a negative 85.9; its median household income was $27,993 and median house value, $167,600. Next was the Elmwood section of Providence with its 02907 zip code at negative 84, for its $28,819 median household income and $147,100 in median house value.
The Business Journals reviewed 15,090 communities and 22,658 zip code territories across the country to determine the most and least affluent communities. Kensington, N.Y., on Long Island, is the most affluent community in America, it found. There, the median household income is more than $190,000, and the median house value is more than $1 million.
The Business Journals analyzed 12 U.S. Census Bureau statistical categories to rank every community by its relative affluence.
At the bottom of the list was Lakeview Estates, Ga., approximately 25 miles east of Atlanta. Census data said no one who lives there earns six figures and only 1.6 percent of the residents have a bachelor’s degree. The median household income is $26,000 and the median house value is $22,000.
