PROVIDENCE – “Elf,” the 2003 film about an adopted North Pole elf searching for his birth father in New York City, is the favorite holiday movie in Rhode Island, as well as that of seven other states, according to data from CableTV.com.

The Internet and cable resource website ranked its findings after cross-referencing American Movie Classics’ highest rated holiday films with state-by-state Google trends.

Macaulay Culkin’s portrayal of Kevin McCallister in the now-classic 1990 “Home Alone” was the top holiday movie across the nation being chosen by Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas and Virginia.

“Elf” also was the top choice in Massachusetts, while “White Christmas” (1954) was Vermonters’ favorite, “Scrooged” (1988) was first in New Hampshire and the 1964 version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” won in Maine.

Set in Connecticut and released in 1945, “Christmas in Connecticut” won the hearts of holiday viewers in the Nutmeg State.

Across the South, states preferred Christmas comedies and cartoons.

Alabama and Tennessee picked “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989). North Carolina and South Carolina and Kentucky chose “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” released in 1965, and Mississippians went for the classic, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Author Kaz Weida added, “Perhaps the warmer temperatures and the lack of snow put a little more spook into the West’s seasonal preferences” as New Mexico, Nevada, California and Arizona chose the 1993 Tim Burton film “Nightmare Before Christmas” as their favorite holiday movie.
