PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University has the 12th best culinary program in the country, according to College Rank, a website that ranks college programs.

College Rank on Monday released its findings, placing the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City at the top of the list. The only other New England schools to earn spots on the list were the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vt., and Le Cordon Bleu College in Cambridge, Mass., at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

College Rank took into account graduation rates, class sizes and professional direction, as well as hands-on experience available to students.

College Rank noted that JWU has four campuses around the country, and noted its culinary program has received accolades for its small classroom sizes, modern kitchens and skilled instructors. It said it also has been endorsed by famed celebrity chef and alumnus, Emeril Lagasse.

“Culinary schools, while sometimes expensive, are fundamentally important for young cooks. Attending a great school with excellent restaurants gives students an opportunity to learn the basics and techniques of cooking while also gaining perspective of actual working cooks and chefs,” Monica Dennis, from the College Rank team, said in a statement. “In addition to chefs, culinary schools are training the next generation of restaurant entrepreneurs. The skills you learn on the business side of managing a restaurant are skills that will impact the way you run your own kitchen for years to come.”
