Report: MBTA suffering from ‘unsustainable’ operating budgets

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has a maintenance backlog approximately $500 million greater than estimates offered last month and “unsustainable” operating budgets, the Boston Business Journal reported Wednesday.

The BBJ cited a new report from the state-appointed MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board, which was presented to the Massachusetts legislature.
The board is expected to provide a more detailed annual report by Dec. 15 to the legislature regarding the MBTA.
The latest report said the MBTA’s structural deficit is expected to reach $170 million in the current fiscal year and could hit $427 million in fiscal 2020. Nearly 45 percent of the maintenance backlog is related to its subway system, the BBJ said.
