PROVIDENCE – Providence College ranked 19th among master’s colleges and universities for semester-long study abroad programs. It also ranked fourth in New England and No. 1 in Rhode Island in the 2016 annual Open Doors Report released by the Institute of International Education, the college announced Wednesday.

Each year, PC students enroll in study abroad programs in approximately 25 countries across the globe including Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, Jordan, China, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Currently, there are an estimated 135 students enrolled in semester-long study abroad programs for the spring 2017 semester for which they will receive academic credit.

Once considered an extra-curricular component of a student’s education, dean of international studies Adrian Beaulieu said: “As the workplace becomes increasingly more diverse and multicultural, it will be critical for students to be prepared to succeed in that evolving environment.”

He added: “Education abroad and the experience of living and studying in another culture can be a key variable in students’ career readiness and development. Done well and with purpose, it can help students distinguish themselves to future employers.”

Every November the Open Doors Report is released to coincide with the beginning of National International Education Week and reflects the findings from the year prior.
