PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital city is the nation’s 22nd neediest, according to a report released Wednesday by WalletHub about which cities are the most economically disadvantaged.
The financial services website looked at the 150 largest U.S. cities, ranking Detroit as the most needy. Brownsville, Texas, was second, followed by Memphis, Tenn.; Atlanta; and Cleveland.
Providence ranked the highest among the New England states; Boston was next at 44th.
In the subcategory of economic well-being, Providence improved to 15th, but it plunged to 57th in health and safety.
The least needy city on the list? Overland Park, Kansas.
WalletHub looked at rates for child and adult poverty, unemployment, foreclosures and food insecurity, among other factors, such as high school drop out rate and uninsured rate, to come up with its findings.
