Report: Providence potential site for new GE headquarters

PROVIDENCE – Providence is one of the locations that General Electric Co. is looking at for a potential new headquarters.
Providence, along with Boston and New York, are on the short list of locations that the conglomerate is considering, according to a report in the Boston Globe on Thursday, which cited people familiar with the search as sources.
GE is based in Fairfield, Conn., and the company has not ruled out staying there, the Globe reported.
Connecticut in June put in place tax changes that would raise costs for companies like GE, prompting the company to look for a new home. Since then, Conn. Gov. Dannel Malloy and the legislature approved a budget bill during a special session this week removing some of the changes that worried companies, the Globe said.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Gina M. Raimondo, Marie Aberger, wrote in an email that it “would be unwise for us to comment on the existence or status of any individual conversations unless and until such time as the projects, if any, are far enough along to discuss publicly.”
“The governor’s principal focus – as it has been for a year – is attracting companies to invest in Rhode Island and put people back to work here. She and Secretary Pryor are continuously in conversations with companies in and outside Rhode Island regarding potential expansions and relocations, and are working aggressively to bring more jobs to the state,” Aberger said.
Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza could not be reached for comment.
