PROVIDENCE – With Father’s Day this weekend, Rhode Island has been named the 16th best state for working dads.
WalletHub, a personal finance website, said nearly 93 percent of fathers with children younger than 18 are in the labor force. To come up with its list of the best and worst states for working dads, it studied 20 metrics, ranging from day care quality, parental leave policy and child care costs to average commute time, male uninsured rate and male life expectancy.
Minnesota ranked as the best state for working dads, followed by Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey. New Hampshire placed 14th, while Maine ranked the lowest in New England at 22nd. Last on the list, which also included Washington, D.C., was Nevada.
Among four subcategories, the Ocean State fared the best in work-life balance, ranking fifth in the nation. Its worst ranking was in the subcategory of economic and social well-being at 35th.
Rhode Island also has the fifth-highest child care costs in the nation, WalletHub said, ahead of only Florida, Nevada, New York and Wisconsin.
