PROVIDENCE – Arizona may have displaced Rhode Island as the least charitable state, but the Ocean State remains in the bottom 10 on WalletHub’s annual list.
Rhode Island is the ninth-least charitable state in the nation, the financial services website said Monday. Massachusetts is only slightly better, ranking 10th-least charitable.
In comparison, Utah is the most charitable state in the nation, and New Hampshire is the most charitable among the New England states, coming in seventh. Connecticut was next at 16th.
Maine and Vermont ranked 22nd and 24th, respectively.

Rhode Island ranked low in the following subcategories – 48th for lowest percentage of population collecting and distributing food and lowest percentage of donated income, and 47th for lowest percentage of population who claim to have donated time.
However, Rhode Island ranked fourth best for highest percentage of population who claim to have donated money.
Just in time for #GivingTuesday, which kicks off the charitable season and is held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, WalletHub evaluated states to determine which are the most and least charitable, studying metrics ranging from volunteer rate and percentage of income donated to the number of volunteering hours per capita, percentage of sheltered homeless and number of public charities per capita.
WalletHub said nearly one-third of all annual giving takes place in December, and the United States ranks second overall in this year’s Charities Aid Foundation World Giving Index, behind only Myanmar.
