Report: R.I. doctors among 10 lowest paid in U.S.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranks 41st, or 10th lowest, in average doctor salary in the nation, according to 24/7 Wall St., a financial news and opinion company.
The average salary for a doctor in Rhode Island is $174,300, while the average salary for all jobs is $50,780, 11th highest in the nation. The Ocean State also had a cost of living that is 1.3 percent lower than that of the nation.
24/7 Wall St., which released its results this week, said there are more medical doctors in the top 1 percent of earners than any other profession, noting the average salary of family and general practitioners nationwide is $192,120. Specialists can earn even higher salaries, the website said, adding anesthesiologists are among the highest paid medical professionals, earning about $258,000 a year on average.
To identify the states where doctors earn the most and the least, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the average annual salary of family and general practitioners in every state using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics survey, and federal Bureau of Economic Analysis data on cost of living.
It found doctors in Alaska earn the most with an average annual salary of $235,600, while physicians in Oklahoma earn $144,100 a year, the lowest of any state.
New Hampshire and Massachusetts ranked the highest nationally among New England states for average doctor pay at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. In New Hampshire, doctors make an average salary of $214,020 and in Massachusetts, $212,210.
Connecticut was No. 26 with average doctor pay of $196,730. Maine was 37th for average doctor pay of $177,790.
The only New England state to rank lower than Rhode Island for average doctor pay was Vermont at No. 45, or sixth lowest, at $165,710. Vermont’s cost of living also is 1.2 percent higher than that of the nation, 24/7 Wall St. said.
