PROVIDENCE – Some good news for Rhode Islanders – they live in the fourth-safest state in America.
In fact, New England is the safest region in the country, as the New England states dominate the top spots in WalletHub’s latest ranking in recognition of National Safety Month.
The top 10 states for safety are:

  • Vermont
  • Massachusetts
  • New Hampshire
  • Rhode Island
  • Maine
  • Connecticut
  • Minnesota
  • Virginia
  • Utah
  • Iowa

Mississippi ranked last on the list, which also included Washington, D.C. (No. 30). Oklahoma was 50th, and Alaska, 49th.
The personal finance website said it studied 25 metrics, including the number of assaults, murders, rapes, thefts, sex offenders and law enforcement employees per capita, as well as unemployment rate, estimated losses from climate disasters, poverty rate and pedestrian fatality rate per capita.
The Ocean State was recognized for having the fifth-fewest motor vehicle fatalities in the U.S. per 100 million vehicle miles of travel, and was tied for third with Connecticut and New Jersey for having the fewest fatal occupational injuries per total employees.
Rhode Island also ranked first in the workplace safety subcategory and fourth in subcategories of home and community safety and road safety. Its lowest subcategory rank was 36th, in financial safety.
