WASHINGTON - Rhode Island has the lowest percentage of A-grade hospitals in the nation according to the Hospital Safety Score report released Friday by the Leapfrog Group.

The report graded 2,652 hospitals across the U.S. on safety, patient injuries, medical and medication errors and infections.

Critical-access hospitals, long-term-care facilities, mental-health facilities, federal hospitals and pediatric hospitals were excluded from the report.

Of Rhode Island’s ten graded health facilities, none received As.

Newport Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, South County Hospital, Landmark Medical Center, Westerly Hospital and Miriam Hospital all received B grades on the report.

Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Roger Williams Hospital, St. Joseph Health Services of R.I. and Kent County Memorial Hospital earned Cs in the report.

Comparatively, in Massachusetts, which scored best on the report, 74 percent of hospitals earned As.

“More than 400 people die every day from hospital errors such as medication mix-ups, accidents and infections," Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group, said in prepared remarks.

"Ultimately, we want all hospitals to get 'A's.' But it is interesting to see that hospitals in some parts of the country seem to be particularly focused on safety,” added Binder. “We encourage the people who live in states that fared worse in the Hospital Safety Score to have a conversation with their doctors about the quality of care."

Leapfrog intends to reissue a new Hospital Safety Score report with updated data in November, with an annual report to follow in 2013 and beyond.

Westerly Hospital's score was unintentionally left out of this article.
