Reports: Boston out as Olympics host

BOSTON – Boston is out of the running for the Olympics in 2024, according to news reports.
The Boston Globe cited two officials close to the discussions, while the Boston Business Journal quoted Gov. Charlie Baker.
The news about the United States Olympic Committee dropping Boston for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games followed reports about Mayor Martin J. Walsh saying that the financial risks were too great for Boston to be a host.
“I strongly believe that bringing the Olympic Games back to the United States would be good for our country and would have brought long-term benefits to Boston,” the two media outlets quoted Walsh as saying in a statement. “However, no benefit is so great that it is worth handing over the financial future of our city, and our citizens were rightly hesitant to be supportive as a result. We always anticipated having the time to do our due diligence on the guarantees required and a full review of the risk and mitigation package proposed last week. This is a monumental decision that cannot be rushed, even if it means not moving forward with our bid for the 2024 Summer Games.”
Earlier in the day, Walsh told the Boston Business Journal that he would not sign a financial guarantee to cover cost overruns associated with the 2024 Olympic summer games.

According to the Journal, that was a provision that Olympics organizers had said was required in order to bring the games to Boston.
