RIRRC to engage in online item exchange

JOHNSTON – The R.I. Resource Recovery Corp. intends to “sell, trade, donate and otherwise exchange” surplus items online through the Reuse Marketplace with other firms across the Northeast region, the agency announced on Thursday.

The free, newly-launched website, ReuseMarketplace.org, provides a no-cost listing service to New England, New York and New Jersey-based government agencies, businesses, nonprofit groups and institutions. With the website, members are free to broker or donate their extra materials and resources amongst one another in person, list items to sell or make purchases, said a release.

In a move to generate a trend in mutual recycling and surplus exchange among local firms, the RIRRC also hopes that the online service will help reduce the agency’s waste management costs while finding new uses for what would otherwise be discarded. Members have listed everything from office supplies, TVs and cubicles, to conference room tables, garage doors and buildings.

“This service gives the many public and private entities that call Rhode Island home the opportunity to embrace the reuse philosophy,” David Bordieri, RIRRC waste prevention coordinator, said in prepared remarks. “Those that take advantage of Reuse Marketplace’s regional network will quickly find it yields both environmental and economic benefits. We encourage all Rhode Island entities to visit the website and see how their organization may benefit from the service.”

The Northeast Recycling Council, a regional environmental and waste management nonprofit, administers and manages the Reuse Marketplace, reviewing all listings and membership requests that come through the website.

The RIRRC is a quasi-state environmental and waste management agency and the owner and operator of the Materials Recycling Facility and Central Landfill in Johnson.
