CRANSTON – Job growth in Rhode Island exceeded employment estimates for the third quarter of 2012 by 4,900 jobs, according to a press release from the state Department of Labor and Training, bringing the revised number of jobs in the state to 464,400 at the end of September.

The revised employment estimates done in February are based on an analysis of tax data from 32,000 businesses and were compared to previous DLT estimates done in September 2012.

Several industry sectors showed growth in the third quarter.

Professional and business services reported 56,000 jobs, an increase of 2,600, or 4.9 percent, from the September 2012 estimate. Retail trades employment grew to 47,000 jobs, a 2,100 job, or 4.7 percent, increase from earlier estimates.

The analysis also showed growth in a combined category of other services, such as equipment and machinery repair, personal care and domestic help, which reported 78,300 jobs, up from earlier estimates by 1,100 jobs or 1.4 percent.

Tax data showed significant decreases in job estimates for education services, information services and manufacturing.
