Rhode Island Foundation unveils social media campaign to promote giving

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation on Monday launched a new social media campaign dubbed “12 Days of Giving” to promote philanthropy.
The foundation is asking donors to tweet, share or email about their giving strategies, said Foundation Spokesman Chris Barnett.
“Use #RIgives or email RIgives@RIfoundation.org to share why you give and what you’re proud to support,” the website landing page reads.
“The goal is to inspire action, generate buzz about philanthropy and enlist everyday Rhode Islanders to become ambassadors for giving,” said Barnett.
The foundation chose 12 broad categories that begin on the first day with “health care.” The categories, which change each day, “align with our strategic priorities or current campaigns,” said Barnett. Daily, through Dec. 12, another topic will be unveiled, such as basic human needs, which covers food, housing, and other necessities, he said.
“The campaign does not promote giving to any particular nonprofit,” Barnett said. “It leaves the decision about where to contribute up to you. Instead, we hope it gets people thinking more about philanthropy in all its forms.”
The Rhode Island Foundation announcement comes in advance of Giving Tuesday, a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season. Giving Tuesday is on Dec. 2, and this is the third year it has been held. Organizations around the world have joined the Giving Tuesday movement.
