Rhode Island Hospital to eliminate 200 jobs

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Hospital late Tuesday said it plans to eliminate the positions of 200 full- and part-time employees due to a “significant deficit” this fiscal year.
The Lifespan hospital’s fiscal year ends Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Most of the affected employees are expected to “eventually secure other positions within Rhode Island Hospital or at Lifespan-affiliated hospitals,” the hospital said in a statement. The reduction in jobs is expected to result in “significant savings” in overtime and contractual expenses equivalent to 100 full-time positions, the hospital said, without identifying the actual savings.
The cuts will necessitate the closure of the early- intervention program of Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric division of the hospital. The program is one of 10 in the state that provides services to children between birth and 3 years of age who have or who are at risk for developmental challenges. Seventeen employees will be affected, the hospital said.
The statement also cites costs that are rising faster than reimbursement rates and other sources of revenue as reasons for the layoffs.
