Rhode Island Housing authorizes $24M for affordable housing improvements in Providence

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island Housing has authorized $24 million in funding for affordable housing improvements in the West End of Providence, including 57 new homes at the Phoenix Renaissance Apartments and a renovation of the Aaron Briggs Apartments.
Once completed, the Phoenix Renaissance development at the corner of Linwood and Cranston streets will serve families and individuals at risk of homelessness, according to a release from the state housing agency. The development will be the second phase of a community revitalization project, centered on Cranston Street and overseen by Omni Development Corp.
The project will reconfigure two existing multi-family developments to reduce density, while also adding new units.
“The additional 57 homes in 12 buildings will significantly improve the appearance and vitality of the Cranston Street gateway into Providence from Cranston and Route 10,” said Rhode Island Deputy Director Carol Ventura, in a prepared statement. “This $12.6 million investment will complement our previous investment of $24 million in Phoenix Apartments, resulting in improved homes for individuals requiring supportive services.”
The Aaron Briggs Apartments, a rental facility on Cranston Street serving seniors and individuals with disabilities, will receive $2.3 million in upgrades, including new windows, masonry repairs, and general site improvements. Upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms and common areas also will be made.
