PROVIDENCE – Since bringing the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program to Rhode Island in 2007, the HelpCenter at Rhode Island Housing has provided foreclosure prevention counseling to more than 14,000 Rhode Islanders, the organization announced Thursday.

“Our HelpCenter, which is staffed by experienced [U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development]-approved and [Hardest Hit Fund Rhode Island]-certified counselors, is a safe place where Rhode Islanders at risk of losing their home can go for counseling,” Richard H. Godfrey, executive director of Rhode Island Housing, said in a statement.

“The services at the HelpCenter are free, and we encourage Rhode Island homeowners who are struggling to call the HelpCenter at the first sign of having difficulty making a mortgage payment. The sooner people come to us for help, the more options they will have.”

On a state level, the NFMC program has helped 14,226 since its inception. Nationally, the program has helped more than 1.5 million American homeowners by helping save local governments, lenders and homeowners roughly $920 million.

“The NFMC program has reached an important milestone with the announcement of 1.5 million homeowners served,” NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen Fitzgerald said in prepared remarks. “The latest report shows that the program helped save homeowners, local governments, and lenders approximately $920 million, and the program could not have achieved this success without Rhode Island Housing’s HelpCenter and other NFMC program organizations. The program helps individuals and families regain their financial footing.”
