PROVIDENCE – The deadline to submit an idea for the fourth round of the Rhode Island Innovation Fellowship is Friday.

The two fellows who are selected will receive up to $300,000 over three years to develop, test and implement their ideas, which must have the potential to dramatically improve any area of life in Rhode Island.
Noting the fellowship program was created by philanthropists Letitia and John Carter, Rhode Island Foundation Vice President Jessica David said, “I like to think that it was born out of their spirit of entrepreneurship, commitment to our community and confidence in Rhode Island.”

Only Rhode Islanders aged 18 or older are eligible to apply. Recipients must commit to staying in Rhode Island for the three-year duration of the fellowship. Elected officials, Rhode Island Foundation employees and board members, and their family members are ineligible to apply.

Proposed ideas must specifically benefit Rhode Islanders. Ideas must be implementable, not merely theoretical, and issues of sustainability will be addressed during the application process.

“This fellowship is built around the spirit of entrepreneurship … therefore, risk-taking is essential. We expect failures, or at least non-conclusive results after three years, for some fellows,” information from the Rhode Island Foundation states.

Fellows named earlier this year in the third round of the program were Amy L. Bernhardt, who is creating a digital inkjet textile design and manufacturing facility in Rhode Island, and David Dadekian, who is developing a public food market, commercial production and food processing facilities, and tourism and educational components to supplement them.
