PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island taxpayers have 10 days left to file their personal income tax returns, which are due by Monday, April 15, the R.I. Division of Taxation reminded Rhode Islanders on Friday.

Resident and nonresident returns must be e-filed or postmarked on or before 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 15.

“There have been times in the past when the mid-April filing deadline fell on a day other than April 15,” R.I. Tax Administrator David M. Sullivan said in a statement. “But this year, April 15 is really April 15.”

Sullivan added that residents should complete their returns as soon as possible and file them electronically to avoid the last-minute crunch and to ensure prompt processing by the Division of Taxation.

Nearly 90 percent of Rhode Islanders (89.2 percent) have already filed with the Tax Division, compared with 86.3 percent during the same time in 2012.

A total of 369,919 returns have been filed so far this year, with e-filing accounting for 89.2 percent of all submitted filings.

Taxpayers who can’t file a personal income tax return by the deadline can file for an automatic six-month extension that will push their filing deadline to Oct. 15. The extension is for both resident and nonresident returns.

The average refund this year is $536, according to the Tax Division, an increase of 4 percent from 2012.
