Rhode Island’s state website again finalist in ‘Best of the Web’ competition

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island state website again was recognized as a finalist in the 20th annual “Best of the Web” competition by the Center for Digital Government.
The website – www.ri.gov – was recognized as a finalist in the state portal category, along with California, Iowa and Michigan.
Rhode Island’s website also was a finalist in the competition last year.
NIC Inc., a provider of digital government services, said that eight of its state government partners were ranked as the best state government websites in the country, including the top five and Rhode Island and Iowa.
Maryland took top honors, ranking as the best state government website in the country. Rounding out the top 5 were Utah in second place, Mississippi in third place, Texas in fourth place, and Indiana and Nebraska, which tied for fifth place.

Rhode Island’s website, which receives nearly 105,000 monthly unique visitors, was noted for its user-driven features and responsive design, which was deemed a necessary feature as analytics showed that more than 20 percent of users were accessing the site with a mobile device. It said the website also offers 150 online services for the state’s residents and businesses.
“Government websites have changed a lot over the past 20 years and so have citizen expectations,” Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government, said in a statement. “This year’s winners are well positioned to take up the challenge of a new era and lead the impending transformation toward more integrated, anticipatory and personalized electronic services.”
The Center for Digital Government is an international research and advisory institute on the use of information technology in government. Awards will be presented Sept. 30 in New Orleans.
