PHILADELPHIA – Roger Williams National Memorial brought in $3.33 million in revenue to the state in 2010, according to a National Park Service study.

Rhode Island’s only national park was responsible for 51,559 visitors and supported 53 jobs, it said.

Most of the revenue, 52 percent, was related to lodging, food, and beverage service, followed by: other retail, 29 percent; entertainment, 10 percent; gas and local transportation, 7 percent; and groceries, 2 percent.

The 4.5 acre park is located at 282 North Main St. in downtown Providence, and includes a freshwater spring which was the center of the settlement of Providence Plantations founded 1636. It was established by the U.S. Congress in 1965.

The visitor center is open seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from Columbus Day through Memorial Day, and until 5 p.m. during the summer.

The figures are based on $12 billion of direct spending by 281 million visitors in 394 national parks and nearby communities and are included in an annual, peer-reviewed, visitor spending analysis conducted by Dr. Daniel Stynes of Michigan State University for the National Park Service.
