Rogers students participate in fair

NEWPORT – About 100 high school seniors last month gathered at Rogers High School in Newport to participate in the Financial Education Fair, bringing to an end a series of financial literacy presented by BankNewport.
Participating students had to go through a “realistic budgeting experience,” and were presented with a series of spending decisions, according to a press release.
“The fair provided students with the opportunity to put into practice what they learned in the classroom and to interact with local businesses as consumers based on their chosen career and corresponding monthly income,” according to the release.
This is the third year BankNewport has partnered with Rogers High School to sponsor its financial literacy program, which aims to complement the school’s “personal financial education” initative for students.
BankNewport, with $1.3 billion in assets, sent its management team to present at the high school monthly, introducing “students to strategies for selecting and developing a successful career, the benefits of establishing savings and checking accounts, a demonstration of electronic banking services, a review of financial planning and saving for the future,” according to the release.
Local businesses at the event included Best Buy, Community College of Rhode Island, Donovan Travel, Empire Beauty School, Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty, Hyundai of Newport, Newport County YMCA, OceanPoint Insurance Agency Inc., Potter League for Animals, RaNEW All Salon & Spa, Salve Regina University, Serve Rhode Island and Stop and Shop of Middletown, according to the release.
