Romeo honored for engineering

Frank Romeo, president and CEO of BETA Group Inc., has been named the 2016 recipient of the Providence Engineering Society’s Freeman Award. The award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated engineering excellence and advanced the engineering profession throughout their career.

What initially led you to pursue a career in engineering?

While in high school, my advisers always pushed me toward a college major in engineering because of my aptitude in math and science. However, it wasn’t until I began studies at Northeastern University that I truly realized that was to be my career goal. The school’s outstanding cooperative education program allowed me to experience hands-on training.

You credited BETA founder and chairman Michael E. Grilli with providing mentorship. What are some things he taught you?

Mike certainly helped me focus on and fine-tune my human-relations skills. He always instilled in me that, being in a service industry, you can never forget the importance of maintaining strong professional relationships both inside and outside of the office. Understanding the importance of client relations as part of your daily job is critical to being successful.

How has BETA evolved over the years?

The firm has grown from approximately 15 to more than 140 employees since 1986. Our business plan has included a controlled growth model during that time. In general, our growth has resulted from expanding areas of in-house expertise, widening our geographic service area, and completing a strategic merger and acquisition.

Is there a particular project that stood out to you?

I served as the technical adviser to the North End and Central Waterfront Communities of Boston during the construction of the Central Artery Project. We assisted the residents in achieving several mitigation measures from the project which improved their quality of life during the process.

What’s ahead for BETA?

We are very pleased and excited to be involved in the development of the new Citizens Bank campus in Johnston. •
