RootMetrics: AT&T, Verizon tie for best overall wireless performance

PROVIDENCE – RootMetrics recently released a statewide wireless performance network study for the first half of 2015, showing that AT&T and Verizon tied for first place for overall performance.
Seattle-based RootMetrics rated the four largest wireless carriers, showing that AT&T scored 97.4; Verizon, 96.3; T-Mobile, 93; and Sprint, 91.4, out of 100 possible points in its “RootScore” report.
To come up with the results, a total of 1,044 miles were driven and 32 indoor locations were tested. A total of 27,142 tests were conducted.
AT&T and Verizon also shared lead in several categories, including network reliability, with a 98.7 score and 97.8 score, respectively, as well as calls, with AT&T scoring 97.5 and Verizon, 96.2.
AT&T took the lead in the remaining three categories: network speed, 93.2; data, 97.1; and text, 98.1.
Verizon came in second in those categories, tying with T-Mobile for network speed at 91.7. Sprint was third for network speed at 77.5.
Verizon’s data score was 96.5, while T-Mobile received 95.1 and Sprint, 89.1.
Sprint and T-Mobile tied for call reliability, while Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile all tied in the text category.
“AT&T is tied for the highest rank in our statewide study of overall network performance in Rhode Island. Our Rhode Island RootScore Report looked at data, call and text performance across all network technologies, including 4G LTE in Rhode Island. We look at performance from a consumer’s point of view, and AT&T offered a very strong overall network performance for those in Rhode Island during our tests,” said Julie Dey, vice president of RootMetrics, said in a statement.
Patricia Jacobs, president, AT&T New England, said that AT&T’s wirless network performance continues to receive “positive feedback” from RootMetrics in its biannual survey.
“We’re pleased that AT&T has the nation’s most reliable 4G LTE network and strongest LTE signal, allowing our customers to do the things they love on their LTE wireless devices such as stream music and videos or surf the Web. And we continue to invest in our network,” Jacobs said.
Dave MacBeth, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless, said the company is proud to receive “this independent validation of Verizon Wireless’ network leadership in Rhode Island and across New England.”
“We’ve reinvested more than $4 billion into our wireless networks across New England since 2000, including $172 million in enhancements during the first half of 2015. It’s our culture of ‘continuous improvement’ that drives us to innovate and deploy new technologies in support of our customers who rely on their devices, apps and accessories every day,” he said.
Verizon recently added new coverage in areas of Barrington, Cumberland, Narragansett, Tiverton, Warren and West Warwick.
