SBA honors New Bedford native

NEW BEDFORD – The U.S. Small Business Administration has named New Bedford native Paula White, CEO and Founder of Duxbury, Mass.-based 600lb gorillas Inc., the 2012 Massachusetts Small Business Person of the Year, according to SouthCoastToday.com.

600lb gorillas - a business that develops and sells all-natural frozen desserts - was co-founded in 1999 by White and her husband, Chris White.

The SBA nominees are judged on seven basic criteria: growth in number of employees, staying power, increase in sales, financial reports, product innovation, response to adversity and contributions to the community.

“This is the highest honor bestowed by SBA each year in celebration of the outstanding achievements, challenges and contributions of our small businesses,” said Robert H. Nelson, district director of SBA’s Massachusetts office.

“There is no individual more deserving of this award than Paula White, and this is a prime example of how far commitment, passion, perseverance will get you,” he added. “Congratulations to Mrs. White and this phenomenal business on winning this prestigious award.”

Alex and Ani owner and designer Carolyn Rafaelian was named the 2012 Rhode Island Small Business Person of the Year.

White will be honored with other Massachusetts Small Business Week winners at an event at Fenway Park on June 6.
